Diaspora Health Statistics

is a research organisation specializing in finding out more about mental and physical health in people with a south Asian background.

There are many different definitions, but by ‘South Asian’ we mean people with ancestors who were indigenous to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

We concentrate our resources in South Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and Australasia.

Roughly 1,900 million people live in these south Asian countries – so just over a quarter of all the people in the world.

A further 44 million people with south Asian ancestors live outside this area.

People with south Asian ancestry are more susceptible to many health challenges. The best known include:

  • Asthma and respiratory diseases

  • Cardio-vascular Disease

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    Infant mortality

  • Memory challenges

  • Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 diabetes
Stroke

We believe that not enough attention is paid to emotional health challenges in people of south Asian ancestry – especially stress, anxiety and depression which can manifest as suicidal thoughts and actions and self-harming.
